From zoos to special nature reserves, Fresno has plenty to offer for nature lovers. You can visit one of the parks with your family, have a picnic, take stunning pictures, and find out more about the flora and fauna of this region of California.

Woodward National Park

One of the favorite picnic places of Californians, this national park is full of hiding places for kids and hiking trails for outdoor explorers. Next time you are planning on making some stunning family pictures, visit this park in the morning or evening, when the lights create a magical atmosphere. The public areas are beautifully maintained and the Shinzen Garden, open on the weekends, is inspired by Japanese traditions. You can take your bike and explore the park on two wheels, as well.

Forestiere Underground Gardens

The underground garden was built by the Sicilian Mr. Forestiere, who wanted to settle down in Fresno and create an underground home for himself in the beginning of the 20th century. You will hear from the friendly guides about the history of the gardens and how the stunning area was constructed using only hand tools. This underground home is best to visit on a hot summer day, and you will find plenty of parking places outside on the street all year.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo

The recently improved zoo is full of surprises for adults and children alike. You will find different themed exhibits, such as the African Adventure and the giraffe area. You are even allowed to feed the animals or pet the stingrays, if you dare. If you would like to admire dragon-like creatures, make sure you visit the reptile house. You will find a friendly cafeteria on site, where you can have lunch during your visit. The attraction is reasonably priced, at $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Kings Canyon National Park

Only over 50 miles East of Fresno, this famous California national park is actually deeper than the Grand Canyon. You can see the third largest tree in the world, the 3,000-year-old General Grant Tree, here and challenge your hiking abilities taking the trails around the park. If you love water sports, make sure you visit the Cedar Grove area, where you can try water rafting and kayaking. Horseback riding is available at the Cedar Grove Stables. Allow a full day to discover the natural beauty of this park and take some superb shots from the Panoramic Point or Redwood Canyon.

Sequoia National Park

Heading East on Highway 198, you will find the amazing Sequoia National Park, and pick your trail according to your ambition and abilities. The Big Trees trail is suitable for all abilities, running for about one kilometer. Visit the Crystal Cave on a hot summer day, and be mesmerized by the curtains of stalagmites and the vibrant colors. If you would like to go for a serious hike, the Wolverton Cutoff Loop is an excellent choice, where you can admire the alpine landscape created by the giant sequoias.
